With several library projects in our portfolio, we were delighted when we were awarded our first Summer Reading campaign project back in 2015. The library asked us to create an engaging look and feel that would appeal to kids from toddlers to teens—no small feat. With the campaign based on a national theme of Superheroes, however, we were ready to leap tall buildings. Our design solution includes a Portland cityscape, superhero silhouette, and bold comic book theme making the logo easy to spot and a snap to implement on everything from posters to t-shirts to game boards. We've since developed the campaign for 2016 through 2023 receiving rave reviews from teachers, library staff, volunteers, parents and the kids participating in the program.
Our backstory with the county library dates to a project to promote The Homework Center, an online resource for students. Few students knew about the resource or how to access it. We distilled library-supplied content into clearer messages and then developed an infographics series on a variety of topics. Other tactics included posters for students and educators and table tents for display at all Multnomah County library locations.
A nice twist in the story developed when the library asked us to design a series of rhyme books. With custom illustrations produced by award-winning children’s book illustrator Mike Austin, rhymes come to life in five colorful, engaging books (produced in five languages).
