Every neighborhood deserves a good café – a hangout where the aroma of roasted coffee and fresh-baked pastries awakens the senses. That’s the idea behind Citizen Baker, Chef David Machado’s new full-service artisan bakery and café on Portland’s Eastside. Citizen Baker, located adjacent to the Hotel Eastlund, livens up the café scene around the Portland Convention Center, an area until now lacking in good dining options.

Concepting and build-out of Citizen Baker coincided with Altabira, Chef Machado’s beer-centric eatery atop the Eastlund. That allowed us to take a family approach to designing the two identities. Drawing inspiration from French boulangeries and vintage bicycle makers, we developed an identity that celebrates the old but with a modern twist. Rounding out the assignment, we designed menus, business cards, tote bags and kitchen staff tees.
